Cystic Fibrosis and Pregnancy

Cystic fibrosis does not only attack children, teenagers and adults, it can also be found in the lives of pregnant women.  Actually a lady who inherits the disease from her parents can still live a normal life if the symptoms are well treated and controlled.  Such a lady can still marry and also get pregnant.    There are also cases of atypical fibrosis which comes with mild symptoms. Some ladies with such conditions can still marry and become pregnant.   In most cases, women with cystic fibrosis don’t encounter infertility problems like their men counterparts.  However, cystic fibrosis and pregnancy must be carefully examined.  There are possible complications that may arise when a pregnant woman is having the ugly condition.

Actually, cystic fibrosis usually    increases with its symptoms during pregnancy.  This usually exposes the expectant mother and the expected baby to great dangers.  There are several complications and symptoms that can occur.  Here are some of them:

  • Severe lung infections.
  • Severe respiratory failure
  • Insufficient weight gain
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Unusual  breathing difficulty

The above complications or symptoms can pose great risk to the expectant mother and the oncoming baby.    In the first place, there may be a possibility of premature delivery.  This is usually the case in the lives of many pregnant women suffering from cystic fibrosis. When the baby is born premature, he or she may die if care is not taken. The baby may be put in an incubator.  He or she may also suffer delayed growth and development.

Again, the mother may suffer serious complications that may put her life at a risk.  She may have to deliver through Caesarian section if the complications continues unabated.   The woman may give up the ghost if the complications are very severe.

There’s also the 100% possibility of transferring the cystic fibrosis to the baby especially if the father of the baby also has the defective gene.  This can as well be avoided if the couple undergo genetic   research test before getting married.
